Over the weekend, Aaron Sorkin landed a Golden Globe trophy for his screenplay for his recent Netflix feature, “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” The award is just one of many the filmmaker has been collecting over this awards season, culminating in what many believe to be some Oscar gold later this spring. And if you listen to the cast he put together for his period legal drama, all of this acclaim and recognition is well-deserved.
In an exclusive featurette we are sharing with our readers, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Jeremy Strong, Frank Langella, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II all share their love for Aaron Sorkin and describe what it’s like to work with one of the best writers and directors working today. While many already are familiar with Sorkin as a screenwriter, ‘Chicago 7’ marks only his second feature behind the camera. And hearing his cast throw compliments his way, it’s clear that Sorkin as a director is just as powerful as he is a screenwriter.
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” tells the true story of a group of anti-Vietnam War protesters that are charged with conspiracy during the 1968 Democratic Convention for attempting to start a riot. The film is largely a legal drama showing the court case presented by the government to attempt to send these folks to jail.
As mentioned, the film has already scored a number of awards and was recently nominated for five Golden Globes, as well as multiple SAG and Critics Choice Awards. It’s also expected to pick up several Oscar nominations for Sorkin’s work.
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” is available now on Netflix. You can watch the exclusive featurette below.
