Timbaland Producing Girlfriends-Centered Rock Group Film, 'Vinyl'

Hip-hop producer extraordinaire and burgeoning mogul, Timbaland (the man behind most of Justin Timberlake’s records) is getting into the movie biz. His film company is producing, “Vinyl,” the story of “five young women facing life-altering decisions about their relationships with members of a rock band,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film is said to begin shooting next spring.

This project has been kicking around for several years now and looked like it might happen in 2005. Thora Birch (whatever happened to her?) and Jenna Malone were once attached to play two of the girls, but presumably left the project for other roles, years ago. Michelle Trachtenberg was also one of the girls mentioned at one time.

Richard Zelniker is still directing the project from his own script. In fact, the project was first announced in the Hollywood Reporter in 2003. The synopis then centered on “the women behind a male rock ‘n’ roll band that is on the verge of breakout success. Birch will play the wife of the lead singer, with Malone taking the character of a naive girl from the good side of the tracks who winds up with a lot of of rock ‘n’ roll spirit in the end.”

Malone told MTV of the project in 2005, ” I don’t want to talk about it too much because I don’t want to jinx it. It’s really the type of girl I’ve met in Hollywood millions of times that I absolutely despise. You know, the wannabe groupie wearing her thong out of her pants, wearing her Uggs with a skirt. Every time she speaks you want to slap her, but I’m really excited about understanding the truth of that situation, the sort of fronts that are put on, her naiveté, trying to make her a real person. I’ve never really played that role, so I just want to make it as honest and truthful as I could.”
