Over the past year, we’ve seen quite a few attempts from studios to create timely films about the COVID pandemic. Sometimes, they’re great, like with Shudder’s underrated “Host.” Other times? Not so great, as we saw with “Songbird.” But when you combine the acting ability of James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan, along with the directing ability of Stephen Daldry, you have to assume that the new film, “Together,” is going to be good, right?

According to Variety, James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan are starring in the new COVID-inspired drama, “Together,” written by Dennis Kelly and directed by Stephen Daldry (“The Crown”). The film starts at the beginning of the pandemic and the lockdown in London in 2020, as a married couple has to experience the lockdown and pandemic in close quarters, which tests their relationship over the course of the year.
“Dennis writes so wittily for these characters and his script had me within the first few pages,” said McAvoy. “When I heard Sharon was involved with Stephen Daldry directing it was a no-brainer. It’s a hilarious, heartfelt, entertaining, and unconsciously funny exploration of a relationship and a couple facing real tragedy across a year we have all lived through.”

Horgan added, “I think everyone who got involved in this film had no intention of doing a covid drama but then we read Dennis’ script and changed our minds. We shot this in ten days so it was a beautifully stressful experience. Working with Dennis again – and Stephen Daldry and James McAvoy both of whom I’ve admired for years — was a joy. But it also felt like we were making something important. And the fact that it feels like news means that the COVID death toll, the tragedy of so many lives lost unnecessarily, has not been talked about enough.”
The film is produced by Shoebox Films and Sonia Friedman Productions for BBC Two and BBC Film. It’s unclear when the film will be released and how viewers outside of the UK will be able to see it. However, with these stars attached, we have to assume that a Hollywood studio will gladly snatch up the distribution rights.
