Tom Holland Calls New 'Spider-Man' Sequel "The Most Ambitious Standalone Superhero Movie Ever"

If the rumors are true, then the upcoming “Spider-Man” sequel from Marvel Studios and Sony is going to be an absolutely massive film. No, I’m not just talking about box office, but actually in sheer scope, as the speculation surrounds the fact that Tom Holland will be joined by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in a film that will feature the confluence of all three ‘Spidey’ franchises. But of course, if you talk to Tom Holland about all of this, he’s not really going to confirm any of that.

Speaking to Variety, Holland was asked about the “Spider-Man: Far From Home” sequel. And though Holland is known for having trouble keeping secrets and spoilers, he does a fairly decent job of deflecting. Although, reading between the lines does seem to paint a different picture.

“Wait till you see how we kick it off in the third one, you’ll be chuffed,” said the actor about how the third ‘Spider-Man’ film picks up after the cliffhanger ending of ‘Far From Home.’ For those that forgot, the 2019 sequel ended by showing how the world finds out that Peter Parker is, in fact, Spider-Man. Obviously, the fallout of that revelation is going to lead to more shenanigans in “Spider-Man 3.”

But what about those Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield rumors? Holland was quick to deny having any knowledge of that, saying that he has yet to meet Kirsten Dunst and has only met the previous two ‘Spider-Man’ actors in passing a few times. When he was asked about those people appearing in the new sequel, he replied, “Beats me, I don’t know. If they are they haven’t told me yet.”

Yeah, okay. Sure thing, Mr. Holland.

Now, what can he say about the new ‘Spider-Man’ film? Well, he is able to talk about it in a general sense, and boy, does he ever hype it up.

“I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made,” said Holland. “You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it.”

Most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever, huh? That sure does sound like it’s going to have actors from three separate franchises crossing over to do battle, right? Especially when you consider the previous two ‘Spider-Man’ films under Marvel Studios’ watch have been pretty freaking ambitious already. This is about as much of a confirmation of those rumors as you’re going to get out of Tom Holland at this point.

He continued, “And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little shit who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it.”

As for the future, and any roles that he’d be dying to play, the actor is quick to point out a very famous British superspy that he would be willing to suit up as. Or tux up, as it were.

“I’ve got two roles coming up that I’m playing in the next few years that I’m really excited about, but I can’t talk about them yet,” said Holland. “But I mean, ultimately, as a young British lad who loves cinema, I’d love to be James Bond. So, you know, I’m just putting that out there. I look pretty good in a suit.”

Get ready for all those fans to go crazy with the prospect of Holland starring as James Bond in a rebooted franchise. Or better yet, if you’re reading this Barbara Broccoli and the rest of the Bond producers, why not reboot “James Bond, Jr.” and put Holland in as the lead? Pure gold, I say!

In all seriousness, Holland has plenty of major roles coming up in franchise films. So really, does he need to add Bond to the list? Spread the love, Tom!

Cherry” is arriving in theaters on February 26 and on Apple TV+ on March 12. “Spider-Man 3,” or whatever it’s going to be called, is scheduled for December 17.
