As we look back at the last decade, on this final day of the 2010s, surely there are no movies more “cursed” than “Gambit” and “Uncharted.” The former seems to be doomed to never exist thanks to the Disney purchase of Fox, but it’s assumed that somewhere Channing Tatum is working on the 458th draft of the script. In the case of the latter film, despite losing five directors and eventually settling on Travis Knight, “Uncharted” seemed finally ready to go into production and be released in 2020. Well, not so much anymore.
According to Deadline, Knight is the sixth director to step away from “Uncharted,” leaving the film in limbo once again. The report claims that Knight has departed the project because of a scheduling conflict that arose due to star Tom Holland having to postpone the production. You see, Holland is all set to put on the superhero suit once again as Spider-Man in the upcoming threequel that begins shooting this summer for Sony. This means that “Uncharted” would have to get delayed once again and Knight isn’t able to sit around and wait.

So, as we close out this decade, it appears that “Uncharted” is right back where it started — star attached but no one at the helm. Unlike other seemingly doomed productions, Sony does appear keen on bringing “Uncharted” to the big screen eventually. The “Indiana Jones”-esque film is based on a hugely popular video game franchise that, since the very first game was released in 2007, was a fan favorite and appeared tailor-made for a live-action adaptation.
How long has “Uncharted” been in development? Well, back in the day, about a decade ago, Mark Wahlberg was attached to star in the film as Nathan Drake. But since the film has seen a revolving door of directors come and go, Wahlberg was replaced by the younger Tom Holland. However, Wahlberg is once again attached to appear in the film, but this time he’s set to play Drake’s older mentor. Perhaps in 2029, we’ll still be talking about “Uncharted” with Wahlberg set to play the decrepit old grandpa character?
Obviously, the recently-announced release date of December 18, 2020, is no longer valid, so we’ll just have to wait and see if/when “Uncharted” does actually arrive in theaters.
