Despite its COVID-19-induced delay, “Wonder Woman 1984” is still expected to be a big summer hit this year, only moving from June to August. And though fans will have to wait an extra couple of months to see Gal Gadot return as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, that isn’t stopping Empire from sharing new images of the character, as well as talking about how ‘1984’ differs from the first film.
“The first movie was a coming of age, it was Diana becoming Wonder Woman,” Gadot explained in a new interview. “She was very naive and she didn’t understand the complexities of life. A fish out of water. In this movie, that’s not the case whatsoever. Diana has evolved. She’s much more mature and very wise. However, she’s very lonely. She lost all of her team members and she’s guarded. And then something crazy happens.”
The “crazy” that Gadot describes is the sudden return of Steve Trevor, Diana’s love interest from the first film, played by Chris Pine. Part of the fan anticipation for the ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel is discovering how the very-exploded Trevor is able to return decades later, having not aged a day. Obviously, that secret isn’t being revealed now.

As for why Chris Pine returns, it’s obvious that the actor is someone that Gadot and director Patty Jenkins wanted around given how fans reacted to his character the first time and his impact on the original film’s success.
“Chris was an integral part of the movie, and of its success,” said Gadot. “And because he and I and Patty really enjoyed working together, we all wanted to have him back. And Patty and [co-writer] Geoff Johns found the best way that serves the narrative to bring Steve back.”
